What to Expect
The Ronald and Christina Gidwitz Hall of Birds is a window into our collective ornithological obsession. The Field Museum started building the bird collection as part of the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893—and has never stopped. Our guided tour highlights the following exhibits: Long-legged wading birds, Ptarmigans and grouse, Birds of prey, Gulls and terns, Auks (like puffins and murres), Owls, Woodpeckers. Then we will look at other bird-related highlights in the museum, including photographs and artwork.
Tour Guide
Pat Miller is a Chicago resident and an avid birdwatcher for nearly 30 years and served on the Board of the Chicago Audubon Society (2014-2020). Since 2002 she has been giving public tours of the North American Bird Hall at the Field Museum. Pat will share her beloved birds and museum with us.
Amenities
Following our guided tour, we will gather for lunch at the Field Bistro (on-your-own tab, pay with cash or credit card). After lunch you can stay in the Field Museum as long as you like and explore other exhibits and collections.
The Field Museum is accessible, the Coat Check is temporarily closed.
Registration and Prepayment Required | Space is Limited
- All tour participants must register on the CHPV website and have a ticket purchased in advance to avoid standing in line the day of the tour.

Space is limited. Registration closes on Friday, May 20 at 4:00 p.m. No refunds for cancellations after Saturday, May 21 at 4:00 p.m. Wearing Masks are required. The CHPV-19 Booster Vaccination Record on file is required.

Getting There
It is easy to get to the Field Museum on the Museum Campus by car, public transportation. There are plenty of parking options on the Museum Campus. All options are owned by the Chicago Park District and managed by an outside vendor. Rates and hours are subject to change without notice.
