Elegy [I think by now the river must be thick]
For my father
I think by now the river must be thick
with salmon. Late August, I imagine it
as it was that morning: drizzle needling
the surface, mist at the banks like a net
settling around us — everything damp
and shining. That morning, awkward
and heavy in our hip waders, we stalked
into the current and found our places —
you upstream a few yards and out
far deeper. You must remember how
the river seeped in over your boots
and you grew heavier with that defeat.
All day I kept turning to watch you, how
first you mimed our guide's casting
then cast your invisible line, slicing the sky
between us; and later, rod in hand, how
you tried — again and again — to find
that perfect arc, flight of an insect
skimming the river's surface. Perhaps
you recall I cast my line and reeled in
two small trout we could not keep.
Because I had to release them, I confess,
I thought about the past — working
the hooks loose, the fish writhing
in my hands, each one slipping away
before I could let go. I can tell you now
that I tried to take it all in, record it
for an elegy I'd write — one day —
when the time came. Your daughter,
I was that ruthless. What does it matter
if I tell you I learned to be? You kept casting
your line, and when it did not come back
empty, it was tangled with mine. Some nights,
dreaming, I step again into the small boat
that carried us out and watch the bank receding —
my back to where I know we are headed.

(near 54th Street cul-de-sac between
Kimbark Avenue and Kenwood Avenue)

If you've missed live music this summer. On Labor Day Weekend, musicians from Chicago-based Quartet Parapluie are proud to present a free chamber concert in Nichols Park. Members of Quartet Parapluie have performed with big-name bands, on late-night TV, in commercials, film and documentary soundtracks, on studio recordings, and with top-tier orchestras in the Chicagoland area, but what they'd like most now is to serenade YOU in a park. To that end, violinist Inger Carle and cellist Melissa Bach will begin with a program of classical duets. Later, they'll be joined by violist (and Hyde Park resident) Erielle Bakkum to end the program with a few great pop songs arranged for string trio.
Be sure to bring your own blankets and chairs, and please remain socially-distanced for the entirety of the concert.
This free program is being presented in conjunction by Nichols Park Advisory Council. If you would like to personally support the musicians, virtual donations will be accepted using Zelle (Quickpay) to melissa@quartetparapluie.com, or Venmo to @Melissa-Bach-1. She promises to share all donations with her fellow musicians!

Thought for the Week
Awareness, awareness, awareness
One day, a traveler begged the Teacher for a word of wisdom that would guide the rest of the journey.
The Teacher nodded affably and, though it was the day of silence, took a sheet of paper and wrote on it a single word, Awareness.
Awareness? the traveler said, perplexed. That’s far too brief. Couldn’t you expand on that a bit?
So the Teacher took the paper back and wrote, Awareness, awareness, awareness.
But what do these words mean? the traveler insisted.
Finally the Teacher reached for the paper and wrote, clearly and firmly, Awareness, awareness, awareness means… Awareness!
Awareness of the sacred in life is what holds our world together and the lack of awareness and sacred care is what is tearing it apart. We’re a people who lack awareness. We’re a world that has lost a sense of balance. We’re a people for whom wholeness is a frayed and sorry notion. It’s so hard to think that the herbicides I use in my garden contribute to the poisoning of the planet. Or that the emission from our car is one emission too many for our neighborhood. Or that things, things, things are crowding out our senses and our souls.

Don't Even Consider It | Vote Twice
In a moment that left many people scratching their heads, Attorney General William Barr did not seem too sure about whether voting once by mail and a second time in person is illegal when asked about it during a Wednesday interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. Luckily, US House of Representatives Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) was there to help.
The Attorney General of the United States is ignorant of basic voting laws.
So today I sent Bill Barr an officialone-sentence letter to educate him.
