IN MEMORIAM

Janina Golab
March 10, 1925 – February 21, 2023

Chicago Hyde Park Village mourns the passing and celebrates the life of our friend, neighbor, and CHPV member Janina Golab. We share the following message on behalf of her family.
Dear Friends,

Janina Golab passed away in her sleep in the wee hours of Monday, February 20, 2023. Being a strong willed woman, she did it on her own terms; in the bedroom of her own apartment.

She was born, and spent her youth, in Lwow (now Lviv), a turbulent area that throughout its history flew flags of the Red Ruthenia, Galicia, Poland, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Poland (again), Germany, Soviet Union, and now Ukraine. Following World War II, her entire family was forced to leave Lwow and resettle in Wroclaw. Janina started her English Philology studies in Lwow, continued in Wroclaw, and finally was awarded a Master’s degree by the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.

Following her husband’s appointment as a professor of Slavic Linguistics at the University of Chicago, she followed him to Hyde Park in 1962 where she lived for the next 61 years. 50 of those years, she spent in her beloved apartment at the corner of 58th Street and Kenwood Ave.

She taught Polish language at the University of Chicago until she was 72 years old. After she retired, and in need of an audience to lecture, she became a tour guide at the Robie House where she volunteered for 19 years. She was the only tour guide that would thank each visitor in their native language.

We will be having a viewing at the Muzyka Funeral Home at 2157 W Chicago Ave. on Friday, February 24th between 5pm and 7 pm, if you can make it.

Best Regards,
Her Family
