Thank you for the support, patience, smiles, and laughs! | May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Mental Health Awareness Month is an opportunity for us to let everyone know that mental illnesses can affect people of any age, race, religion, or income.
Mental illnesses are medical conditions that disrupt a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others, and daily functioning. It is not the result of personal weakness, lack of character, or poor upbringing and cannot be overcome through willpower. But it is treatable. Most people diagnosed with a serious mental illness can experience relief from their symptoms by actively participating in an individual treatment plan.
Without treatment, the consequences of mental illness for the individual and society are staggering. Untreated mental health conditions can result in unnecessary disability, unemployment, substance abuse, homelessness, inappropriate incarceration, suicide, and poor quality of life.

Medicare provides health insurance coverage for 63 million older adults, people with disabilities, and people with end-stage renal disease. While Medicare coverage is seen as reliable, programmatic nuances mean that not everyone’s Medicare coverage meets their coverage needs and preferences. Traditional Medicare provides access to more providers than any other payer and transparency with out-of-pocket costs, yet those costs add up in a significant way and supplemental plans to help ease their burden come with their own regular costs. Limited access to covered care, and limitations in covered services themselves, also have real implications on Medicare beneficiaries’ health and wellbeing. At the same time, nearly half of Medicare beneficiaries choose to participate in a privately-run Medicare Advantage plan - bringing real advantages while also having real implications on coverage of care.
As our country seeks to improve health equity and support our aging population, it is critical to look at opportunities to make Medicare work for all. The June 2 American Society on Aging Chicagoland Regional Roundtable will explore these issues and what local, state, and national leaders are doing to help.
Speakers:
• Sergio Mojarro, Medicare Training Specialist with Illinois Department on Aging
• David Lipshutz, Associate Director and Senior Policy Attorney with Center for Medicare Advocacy
• Bill Bianchi, Board member with Jane Addams Senior Caucus
• Linda Armitage, Board member with Jane Addams Senior Caucus
• Moderator: Bonnie Ewald, Manager in the Social Work and Community Health department at RUSH University Medical Center
