We all know that being a caregiver for someone with dementia is emotionally draining, physically demanding, stressful, and time consuming. But caregiving also affects our cognition in striking and important ways. It's not just the person living with dementia who changes. We, the caregivers, change too. Let's explore how dementia caregiving wreaks havoc on how we think, feel, and behave. And let's talk about what we can do about it.

This event is open to the general public, including both family caregivers and healthcare professionals. 1.5 CEU credit hours are available for social workers, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.

A collaborative event provided by the AKARAMA Foundation, Renewal Memory Partners, The Village Chicago, Chicago Hyde Park Village, and the Dementia Friendly Hyde Park initiative

MEMORY CAFÉ BUILDS MOMENTUM
Taking Time to Create and Listen
The Memory Café on Chicago's South Side at E 63rd St & Ingleside is not a place to get a coffee fix. Instead, in a safe and nurturing environment, the monthly gathering hosted by Chicago Hyde Park Village (CHPV) and the ARKARAMA Foundation has all the ingredients to support movement, art-making, and musical enjoyment for individuals living with varied dementias and their care partners.

Launched at the ARKARAMA Foundation Community Service Center in October 2023, the hour-long gathering is going strong and stands out by integrating and overlapping program components in a relaxed and welcoming space.

In February, the volunteer team ramped up the art-making activity for participants with non-living bouquet kits. The kits included felted berries, plumes, and branch stems graciously donated by local businesses and organizations and were wrapped in old architectural prints. Participants individualized their bundles with varied ribbons, heart shaped card stock, stickers, and notes. While participants created with color and material, musician volunteer Dave Roen overlaid acoustic guitar to enhance with the joy of music.

“Working with folks that have physical or cognitive challenges and incorporating art helps us slow down and appreciate the individuality of the person. It builds mutual trust and comfort,” says volunteer coordinator, Yetta Starr who, with fellow volunteer, Cheryl Hubbard, contributed to the February program.

The Memory Café welcomes all persons living with dementia and their care partners. Come enjoy a light snack and be prepared to unleash your creative self and have fun in a casual social setting.
