Music and the Mind

Wednesday, March 20
4–5:30 via Zoom

With Sandy Siegel Miller, Ph.D and Jonathan Miller, Creators of Sounds Good/Good Memories Choirs. This event is provided through the collaborative efforts of all the Chicagoland Villages.

Since founding Sounds Good/Good Memories Choirs in 2016, Sandy and Jonathan have wondered, “How can we document in a rigorous way what our singers are saying about the impact on their lives of choir singing?”

The answer to that question is the focus of the March 20th Music and the Mind presentation. The Sounds Good/Good Memories organization has partnered with Northwestern Medicine’s Mesulam Center for Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer's Disease in a research project on music and the mind. Join us for an update on this research.

Discover the mission, work and joys of Sounds Good/Good Memories Choirs, serving over 350 older adults in nine non-audition choirs in Chicago and the suburbs.

Where in the World
Chicago Hyde Park Village works every day to build a welcoming and inclusive community for all members and friends. We hope you will join us at the Lunch Gathering for a new activity we're calling "Where in the World." Look for two large maps where we encourage you to place colored pins marking where in the world you were born and where you grew up. You will also have a chance to answer a few simple questions on paper so we all can learn more about the many different journeys that brought together our CHPV community.

We strive to keep our fees as affordable as possible. With the increasing costs of food and supplies, we are forced to increase the Lunch Gathering fee by the nominal amount of $3 for most participants. The fee for CHPV members at the income-eligible Access membership level will not change. And we continue to honor a "pay what you can" rate at the door for those who find the fee to be a financial barrier to participation.

Schedule
10:30 – Doors open for Exercise with Coach Wesley Pulphus
11:00 – Arrive to chat with friends
11:30 – Announcements and activities begin. Also browse the Book & Jewelry Exchange and get tech help with UofC students

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL DAY OF NOWRUZ!
Tuesday, March 21

Falling on the Vernal Equinox, Nowruz, meaning "new day," is an ancestral festivity marking the first day of spring, the new year, and the renewal of nature for an estimated 300 million people around the world including particularly those along the historical Silk Road. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the "International Day of Nowruz" in 2010 in an effort to preserve, develop, and raise awareness about the culture and traditions related to the festival of Nowruz.

Nowruz includes rituals, ceremonies, and cultural events, as well as the enjoyment of a special meal with loved ones. New clothes are worn, visits are made to family and friends, and gifts — especially for children — are exchanged. Celebrated for over 3000 years in the Balkans, the Black Sea Basin, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East and other regions, Nowruz promotes values of peace and solidarity between generations and within families as well as reconciliation and neighborliness.

Learn more about Nowruz at United Nations and UNESCO.
