DID YOU KNOW? ...
IRA owners age 70½ or over can transfer up to $100,000 to charity tax-free each year. Known as Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs), these transfers offer eligible older Americans a great way to easily give to a charity like CHPV before the end of the year regardless of whether you itemizes your deductions. And, for those who are at least 73 years old, QCDs count toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for the year. Normally, distributions from a traditional IRA are taxable when received. With a QCD, however, these distributions become tax-free as long as they're paid directly from the IRA to an eligible charitable organization. Contact your IRA trustee to make a QCD to Chicago Hyde Park Village.

HPAC Tour of "Cooler by the Lake" with Artist Ann Toebbe
+
Lunch at Almendro Cafe
Tuesday, May 19 at 11am

11 people greatly enjoyed the tour of the Alma Thomas exhibit at the Smart Museum last Tuesday and universally praised the tour guides Ian and Taylor. Most stayed on for lunch at Roux. Alma Thomas, who taught art in the DC public schools for decades and devoted herself full-time to making art only after she retired, is not only a vibrant artist but a testament to the power of creativity in old age. She speaks directly to Village people! The exhibit, Composing Color, is grouped by themes of Space, Earth, and Music. It runs through July 25, 2026. Highly recommended by everyone on this CHPV Little Outing.

IN MEMORIAM
Glyn Dawson
March 23, 1943 – April 14, 2026

Glyn Dawson, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology at the University of Chicago, died on April 14, 2026, at the age of 83. Born on March 24, 1943, in New Mills, England, he was the first in his family and his community to attend university. He earned his BSc and PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Bristol, then emigrated to the United States, joining the University of Pittsburgh before moving to Michigan State University and, in 1969, to the University of Chicago, where he would spend over five decades researching the biochemistry of lysosomal storage diseases, neurodegeneration, and sphingolipid-mediated cell death. His work advanced the understanding of rare childhood neurological diseases, including Batten disease, and contributed to the development of neuroprotective strategies and novel drug delivery systems using quantum dot nanotechnology. He retired in 2023 after a career spanning more than 50 years.

Beyond the laboratory, Glyn was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and a man of wide-ranging curiosity. A lifelong trainspotter and avid birder who observed over half the world’s species, he traveled the globe with his wife Sylvia, whom he met at a university dance and married on July 2, 1966. He was known for his gentle demeanor, his dry British wit, and a quiet attentiveness that shaped the lives of his students and family alike. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Dawson (Sharland); sons Philip (Denise) and Kenneth (Veronica); grandchildren Nathan and Eric; and sister Margaret (Joan) Stafford.
