Knowing what to do in the event of a fire is particularly important for older adults. At age 65, people are twice as likely to be killed or injured by fires compared to the population at large. And with our numbers growing every year, it is essential to take the necessary steps to stay safe. Right here in Hyde Park, we have had two fires of recent — one in a high rise and one in a mid-rise apartment building.

This Senior Fire Safety discussion presented by a firefighter from the Chicago Fire Department's Public Education Division will include fire causes and risks, fire safety, staying safe, prevention tips, what to do in event of a fire in your residence. The Q&A will provide time to ask your burning questions as well.

OUR SPEAKER
Dan Montes is a First Responder Firefighter Paramedic for the 25th Ward. Montes became a paramedic for the city before also being trained as a firefighter. Growing up in Little Village and Pilsen puts Montes in a unique position to understand the needs and nuances of the neighborhoods. Montes's background is primarily in health care and serving the community as a firefighter paramedic, nurse, and board president of a nonprofit to support Latino first responders.
