In 2014, in response to a request from the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau, the Chicago Sister Cities organization formed a Shanghai Sister City subcommittee to work with counterparts in Shanghai to exchange information on best practices for caring for their respective older populations. Until the pandemic, Chicago alternated years of hosting delegations from Shanghai and sending leaders from local social, community, and academic organizations to Shanghai. In addition to interpersonal exchanges and site visits, they shared information on programs and policies for older populations in public forums and discussions. During the pandemic, periodic meetings have continued online. Co-chairs of the Chicago subcommittee, Phyllis Mitzen and Andy Teitelman, will share with us some of the highlights of what we have learned from these exchanges.
